Sony MDR EX71SL WK Fontopia Headphones White

Sony MDR EX71SL WK Fontopia Headphones White

Please note: the newest version of these headphones available are the Sony MDR EX71SLA Fontopia Bud Style Headphones.

The Sony Fontopia Headphones combine an in-ear design with the supply of premium sound and superior bass to your ears. The white design accented by silver and gray fits well with your iPod but can also works just fine with other portable audio players. Fontopia’s 9 mm drivers provide a comfortable fit and sonic isolation through soft silicone earbuds. Meanwhile, an L-shaped gold-plated mini plug ensures the smooth transmission of your stereo’s sound. Three different sizes of earbuds are included to accommodate different ear sizes, and you’ll also find an ultra-high-power neodymium magnet, a hard carrying case, a 1-meter extension cord, and an earbud holder in the package.

User Ratings and Reviews

2 Stars Sound is great, reliability is crap
The sound quality of these headphones is great. Bass is deeper than you would expect. The reliability is terrible. I went through three sets of these headphones in less than 6 months, each time the left earphone went out. I would recommend the Sennheiser CX300 instead.

4 Stars Great sound, better than Shure SE110
The sound coming out of these phones are excellent, good for electronic and rock music. Clear bass and mids. The unfortunate thing is that the rubber glued to the buds eventually lose their grip and begin peeling off after over a ear or 2’s use. The sound quality is much better than Sure’s SE110, and half the price. The rubber tips do a decent isolation job for the price. You will still hear subway noise, but it’ll be 7-15% less bothersome compared to earphones that don’t go in your ear.

4 Stars Short cable design-awesome for iPhone/Shur MusicPhoneAdapter
For those of us, now many millions, with an iPhone, this short cable is a godsend. When used in combination with a Shure Music Phone Adapter, or any other adapter of this type, the length of the cable attached to the headphones is awesome. It has an offset design. From the bridle, the left side is only about 4″, while the right is about 18″. Some complain that the offset in length creates a differential in the audio. Do the math people, the time delay due to cable length is microscopic. The ability to use either one of the earphones to talk on the phone while the other one lasily drapes around your neck out of the way is perfect. I had a pair of V-Moda Vibes with the built in mic, and although they were nice in some ways, I was forced to use the right earphone because the microphone was on that side, and the left one was in the way all the time as it hung down to my belly button or lower. Could you still put the whole thing behind your head to avoid this? No, the microphone is on the right branch, and would be behind your head instead of near your mouth. That of course will not work. The design of the Sony is awesome when used as described above.

Since my iPhone is really the only device I use these on, I love them. Sony has now discontinued this model, and I may have to buy up 2 or 3 pairs just to have them. My first pair I have been using about 2 years, and the left speaker has degraded quite significantly and only produces about 20% of the original volume. The replacement Sony has made is the 76. That model has a Y style cable, where the lengths from the bridle are even, and that will give me the same headaches as the Vibes did, except for the microphone thing as the Shure device provides that functionality.

I also like the sound quality from these. Is it the best thing out there, of course not, but if you listen mostly to Rock and Heavy Metal like I do, at age 40 by the way, they produce sufficient bass and are far better in that respect than the V-Modas. Is the total range the best, again not really, but I have found it acceptable. They certainly blow the iPod headphones out of the water. If you don’t need the split cable, buy the 51’s or 55’s now as they are, as I’ve read, the same earphone but without the two piece cable. However, if you have the same configuration I have, and are looking for a decent earphone, that won’t leave you with 3′ of cable bundled up next to your music phone adapter, these may be the ticket. Better buy two while they last.

1 Star Horrible
I purchased these for my iphone and quickly realized that they were garbage. I did homework and read reviews and these were supposedly better than a pair that I had heard (which I liked). Not even close. The volume level was low, static when connector moved around, and overall sound was just not good. I’m not sure if all of these are the same, but the pair I got was horrible.

5 Stars Nice earbuds.
I can’t justify paying several hundred dollars on earbuds. That being said, I own two pairs of headphones, these and Sony MDR-V700DJ DJ Style Monitor Series Headphones. These fit nicely and have decent sound.

5 Stars The Best I’ve found for travel
I’ve gone through so many headphones, particularly ones that I keep in my gym bag, for workouts, dozens and dozens… until I found these. I just, after about three years, destroyed the set I had– the wire dangled outside my rear car door and got ripped as I drove the car. It took that much abuse to do an iota of damage to them. Even then, only the cord was torn. These are incredibly sturdy and the sound is superb. The cord is pretty special too. It’s a different kind of material, so it’s less likely to kink or get tangled. I’m writing this review because I’m thrilled to find they’re still available. I’m buying three more. An extra backup and one for my better half.

4 Stars Decent headphones no complaints
These headphones sound good, they are lightweight and are fairly inexpensive. The band goes around the neck so it is much more hidden than normal headphones. I have had no problems with them.

5 Stars Good sound, comfortable
These headphones have good sound quality. They fit comfortably behind the head. They have a lot less pressure than the over the head type headphones. The neckband does not get in the way of eyeglasses, but it does push glasses into your head. After using them for a while, the become very uncomfortable if wearing glasses. Probably best for people who don’t use glasses.

5 Stars Very comfortable, sound quite decent
I just received these headphones a couple of days ago, and based on some of the more negative reviews I wanted to see how comfortable they are for a whole day before commenting.

Well, I guess I can say that I can get used to these no problem. There is a slight discomfort after a day (I use them at work at my desk, typical cubicle nation usage), but I had the same with my MDR-Q33’s (clip around the ear) for the first couple of days as well. A couple of weeks into using them every day I couldn’t even tell anymore that I had them on. I loved my old Q33’s and would have bought another pair if I could still find them anywhere. The old Q33’s have a metal jacket around the earphone wires, and my right ear is getting shocked every so often now from a short when plugged in. The newer Sony versions of this style have much thinner pieces going behind the ear now, so I decided to give the street style a try.

The sound – I have to say that they sound great for me. I compared them to the old Q33, and these sound defintely more crisp (highs) and defined (base). I can see though that for other folks there might be an issue sound-wise depending on ear size and head size (I have a relatively small head and very small ears) and how close you get the actual speakers to your ears. The bars are resting on top of my ears, with the connecting piece just hanging in mid air behind my head, which seems fine. All in all I am very happy with this purchase and would defintely recommend anybody to try them out.

4 Stars good but not perfect
Bought this pair of headphones about 6 months back. The headphones are good but not perfect. They look good and the sound quality is good too for such a low price. I use the headphones rough and are normally stored in the front pocket of my backpack. They lasted long (none of my prev. headphones lasted more than 2-3 months) and I’m still using them.

I wear spectacles and at first they were a little uncomfortable around my ears but now I got used to them. One major irritant is the v-shaped frame. It doesn’t sit properly at the back of the head and frequently touches the collar of my shirt. I have to readjust them every time the frame falls down between my neck and the shirt collar.

Overall, 4/5 . Good sound, nice looking, durable but with few drawbacks.

5 Stars Perfect for the gym
I’ve owned these headphones for about a year now and am still just as pleased with them as I was when I first got them. I wear them to the gym and when I go running outdoors. They are super comfortable–I hardly remember I’m wearing them–and the sound quality is actually really good. I have no complaints and would recommend these headphones to anyone.

1 Star In Stock? I DON’T THINK SO!
I purchased this product…twice. The first time, after it didn’t arrive, I contacted Brainstorm corporation and they told me it was out of stock. They refunded my money. A couple weeks later I found it on Amazon under what I thought was a different seller. Turned out is was Brainstorm again…and once again, after contacting them, they informed me it was out of stock and refunded my money. Why do they continue to list it here as IN STOCK? Look at the reviews. The last one before mine is from 2007!

4 Stars Word great!
These earphones work much better than the ones that came with my ipod. They are a little large for my ears but still they work fine.

3 Stars Average Comfort, Decent Sound
Product is adequate for the money. I tried them for use while I sleep, which is what I bought them for, but found them uncomfortable. The sound is pretty good, though.

5 Stars Should’ve Been Sooner
I love these headphones and they don’t fall out of my ears.

Comfort and sound transmission is also great.

Shipping was fast almost the next day.

Sony MDR V500DJ Monitor Series Headphones with Swivel Earcups

The MDR-V500DJ closed supra-aural headphones provide top-end comfort and sound quality. The headphones are part of Sony’s Studio Monitor Series and are built with high-end materials using advanced sound engineering. They are designed to meet the demands of professional and high fidelity users. Sony’s closed type headphones allow only a limited amount of ambient noise into the ear canal, giving your attention fully to the music. The padded earcups fit comfortably, hour after hour. For those who like to use the headphones for single-sided monitoring, these MDR-V500s come with swivel earcups. The earcups are also reversible, and have been designed to be comfortable for on-shoulder use. The supra-aural design is engineered for excellent listening comfort. With this design, the earcups rest lightly on the ear, while the driver units are positioned along the ear canal for ideal sound transport. The wide, molded headband distributes the headphone’s weight evenly. The headphones are foldable for easy storage and portability; when folded, the headphones will easily fit in a backpack or purse. The three meter cord (ten feet) is made of oxygen-free copper wiring for maximum conductivity and minimal noise.

Sony has installed several key features to these headphones to enhance their sound quality. The forty millimeter drive units delivers a deep bass sound and a wide dynamic range (the frequency range extends down to 10 Hz.) Both the stereo mini-plug and the UniMatch phone plug are gold-plated to make sure sound is transported fully and accurately. The gold-plated treatment also helps resist corrosion and supports the headphones’ high conductivity and low noise. The neodymium magnets allow for superb power at a minimum size; these magnets provide more magnetic energy than other inferior magnets. Finally, the PET diaphragm works to deliver low distortion.

Excellent fit, excellent compatibility, excellent portability and excellent sound: these headphones fit the bill for a sound professional.

5 Stars an unsung workhorse of all trades
I have experience with high end headphones, but have even more with DJ headphones(4 years alone, with this pair). I’ve never really loved ANY Sony products, as most are for the masses, and not really catered for any specialty use.

This model has honestly worked more than “good enough” for my DJ needs. While it isn’t for audiophile listening, or reference-grade mastering work, the sound quality is very good. I am not sure what some reviewers here mean. I have never found the sound on this pair to be anywhere near muffled or veiled. The bass was clean, crisp, and very deep. The high frequencies are never harsh; they are rather laid back and balanced. The tonal representation and overall balance works VERY well for beat matching, and blending in sounds. Will you feel as if you’re in the front row of a concert….or on stage, or hearing a singer breathing or spitting on their mic, probably not. You will feel as if you’re in the center of the dance floor, which is what I am guessing its intended use is for. Accurate reproduction of the source is what you get, with a bit of dark coloration, rather than reference-quality neutrality.

With the exception of earcup-padding deterioration (after 4 years of continual use…and serious abuse), these have never failed me, faltered, or fallen apart in any way. They have and do serve their purpose; (professional, bedroom DJ’ing, casual reviewing of material on your home system, game playing, or simply listening to a good tune- regardless of genre) with enough (coiled, and irreplaceable) cord length for all of the above. They’re driven very easily, which is great for mp3 listeners with an I-pod…..or any other portable audio device/player. They’re very user- friendly, as the cups move in most needed directions (perfect for DJ’s, when in need of shouldering the phones during a mix, or folding a cup in… all the way- for simple one-ear monitoring). I found them to be extremely comfortable, enough for hours of work at a time, as well as hanging out on your recliner ….enjoying a CD. They’re light enough to never be a burden, they fold away so you can store, or transport them wherever you wish. These headphones are simply an all- around great pair that you will not regret purchasing if you accept its limits, which are not many at all. I just ordered a pair of Denon d2000’s for mid-level critical listening, I own Sennheiser 650’s with Equinox cables for a serious musical experience, and these headphones will never be outdone for their special purposes. Very fair for their price, and well worth it. I’d spend $100 on these (if I ever needed to)in a second. Give them a try and see if it fits your bill. *no headphone amp required! If you want high-end, then be prepared to spend $350 on AKG, Senn, Grado, Proline, or Beyrdynamic, upwards to $4,000 on Stax ear-speakers + specialty cables (yes, you do need those also, $200+ on top of that). Good luck =0)

1 Star TOO FRAGILE, BROKE AFTER 1 YEAR.
CONS:

Used these for 1 year DJing, and the swivel cup broke. No way to repair

PROS:

Sound quality is perfect for DJing.

3 Stars Decent, but cheap
I bought my V500 2 years ago… they did the job, I took great care of them. I have earings and the earpieces iritated them cause of the pressure. one day while on air I picked them up and put them on. the right ear felt wierd… i took them off and the plastic just snapped off. there’s no structure support for something under pressure against your head… it got weak and just snapped. what a waist of $$ now i have to go buy new ones.

1 Star Break very easily. Only a 90-day warranty. $42.00 repair cost.
I received these headphones about a year and a half ago. I thought they were great until they broke today. I was simply putting them on when the cheap plastic just below the headband snapped in half. They were very well cared for and other than this problem they are still in perfect condition. $80 headphones should not break this easily!

The 90-day limited warranty obviously will not do me any good. Sony wants to charge me $42.00 (not including taxes or the cost to ship them there) just to repair them or replace them with refurbished ones. I’m very, very disappointed and I would not recommend any Sony headphones to anyone.

Stick with Koss headphones. They’re in the same price range (many comparable models are actually less expensive) and Koss actually upholds the LIFETIME “no questions asked” warranty on their products. I’ll never buy any Sony headphones again, and I will examine all other Sony products for cheap, easily breakable parts and short, limited warranties before I purchase them.

5 Stars The Sony MDR-V500DJ are great!
Before I bought the Sony MDR-V500DJ I had heard that they hurt your ears a lot, that usually made me not want to buy them. It is true that at first the headphones hurt my ears, but it’s only in the beginning. Afterwards, your ears get used to the headphones and my ears didn’t hurt.

So I would greatly recommend the headphones because they have some good quality sound, specially if your into loud techno like myself. The bass and the rotating earcups are great, they are nice to wear around your neck.

Overall the earphones are great.

5 Stars Timely shipping
This is for Christmas so we haven’t tried them yet but it was shipped to us quickly.

4 Stars Nice Sound
PROS: Sounds better than other in-ear headphones in it’s price range. It doesn’t sound “Shrill-y” at high volume like the other headphones i tried (e.g. Audio-Technica headphones) When compared to the other brands, this one obviously has better sound and bass. Sound isolation and blocking outside sound is perfect. You can hardly hear anything outside when music is playing.

CON: The original cord is too short! The original earphone cords extended only barely reach your waist! so you will find that using the extension cord is a must, but here comes the next problem, the cord becomes too long now! it’s 1.2m now. if your mp3 is in your pants pocket or in your bag, you will have a lot of ‘extra wire’ dangling around. If only the original wire can be 20cm longer, we won’t need the extension cord.

3 Stars Decent…
I love the look of these, and they do fit quite well. They stay in while I run, and they block out a lot of outside noise. The cons: They are not very loud. I have to turn my iPod almost all the way up to get a decent volume from them. If you have them on a low volume, when you touch the cord you can hear it quite loudly and if you drink something like water, it is loud too. And the cord is extremely annoying. The divider is a couple inches from the left ear, and then there is a ton of slack in the cord comming from the right to the left. And you cannot move the divider.

Basically, comfortable and stay in while running, but due to the poor sound and the ridiculous cord design I would not purcahse again.
